Coalition set to move on gay rights — but not marriage
PRIME Minister John Howard could announce within days a new policy to eliminate discrimination against same-sex couples in legislation.
Speculation is mounting that Mr Howard is set to announce changes to give same-sex couples the same rights of access to a partner's superannuation as are enjoyed by married and de facto couples.
A broader policy would also include equal rights to pensions, tax and other benefits such as Medicare safety net thresholds.

A HISTORIC referendum to recognise indigenous Australians in the constitution will be put within 18 months if the Coalition is re-elected, Prime Minister John Howard pledged last night.
In a dramatic gesture to indigenous Australia before the federal election, Mr Howard did a partial mea culpa, admitting he had failed to deliver his undertaking for reconciliation and promising a fresh start.
Speaking last night to the Sydney Institute, he indicated he now accepted that the symbolic side of reconciliation — which he previously rejected — was important, along with the practical side of reconciliation.

John Howard hasn't done anything for either community that has been positive in the years he has held Australia's top job. If you think he has had a change of heart, then seriously, think again. For John Howard, all he is doing right now is trying to win votes. Trying to turn the fact that the Coalition is set to lose this years election, around. But it really is too little, too late.
If John Howard was serious about making either community, equal in the eyes of the country and the law, then he would have done it years ago. Not now, when he knows his government, and his political party are in serious trouble.
People, do NOT fall for this and begin thinking he is a friend to you, because this man, doesn't know what the word friend really means.
