US air raid kills scores of Iraqis
A US air strike in Iraq that killed 15 women and children represents one of the largest losses of civilian life in a single military raid and a bloody start to the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr.
"Nineteen suspected insurgents and 15 women and children were killed in an operation Thursday in the Lake Tharthar region," a US military spokesman said.
Intelligence reports had indicated members of al-Qaeda were meeting near the lake, a large body of water about 100 kilometres north-west of Baghdad and a redoubt of the insurgency.
